Short-form video apps are all the craze today. People all over the world seem to have an obsession of recording short and sometimes hilarious videos of themselves and uploading it on apps like TikTok, Vigo Live, etc. In India, this craze started a few years ago and no app encapsulates it better than TikTok. This Chinese app owned by ByteDance is so popular that we now have a whole new generation of TikTok stars arguably more popular than even Bollywood stars.
But it now seems that Youtube, the biggest online video sharing platform in the world also wants to cash-in on this digital gold mine. It has recently launched its new feature in which users will be able to create 15 second long videos from the app itself and then upload it for viewing. This is exactly what TikTok does and could pose a serious threat to the industry monopolist.
Youtube’s new feature is in a testing mode as per company sources and will be fully unveiled after the testing procedures are completed. Although the premise of the feature seems promising it is against tough competition as a majority of short video creators are already using TikTok and thus making the jump may not be feasible for them unless they get something truly lucrative. TikTok’s greatest strength is its user compatibility. With dedicated features like a button for managing video speed, special effects, and music controls, TikTok provides a superior experience to its intensely loyal customers.
According to our sources, in the initial testing, the users can create the 15 second long videos in short bursts and the app will convert it automatically into a continuous video for uploading. But the one big thing which may make the feature a hit, at least in India, is its country of origin. With the ongoing Boycott China campaign gaining traction by the day, Youtube an American company may be the way to go for some patriotic users. Unfortunately, this change also signals the end of in-app long video creation for Youtube mobile as users will now have to separately create long videos and upload it from their phone’s gallery.

TikTok like a short video feature is not the only arrow in Youtube’s quiver as sources say that it also plans other completely new and innovative features. Earlier too the company had introduced Instagram like ‘stories’ and thus it has prior experience in locking horns with giants.
While there continues to be a lot of obscurity around Youtube’s new feature, the thing that we can safely decipher is that TikTok now has a bigger and potentially stronger competitor in the world of short-form videos.
